SMOKE SYSTEM
The smoke system is custom designed and the world’s only such
design. It uses the Sanders components, housed within the modified wingtip.
Cooling air in a housing concentric to the burning
chamber and the use of ceramic materials and stainless steel keep the heat
contained. The smooth exit for the smoke into the strong vortex twists the
smoke causing it to linger longer than any other system. The two trails of
smoke will reform into unusual shapes when two or more G’s are being
introduced. The tank holds 16 gallons that will last 10 to 12 minutes.
Each smoke generator has solenoids at the wingtip for the fuel and oil plus
electrical control wiring for the ignition and solenoids. A switch is provided
for each for control from the cockpit. Two push switches are on the stick grip,
one for ON and one for OFF, after the System Master and Fuel Master are selected
ON.
STICK GRIP
o The B-8 grip incorporates the ICS/Radio switch for
the index finger, the Autopilot OFF switch for the pinkie, and the two Smoke
System switches for the thumb. The Coolie Hat switch is used fore and aft to
control the Cowl Flaps OPEN and CLOSED. It is much easier to operate here that
to reach around the throttle quadrant for the standard switch.
ELECTRICAL PANELS
* Custom panels were fabricated incorporating conveniences such as the Darton Clean Kit switches and others.
ENGINE AND ACCESSORIES
* The first engine was replaced after approximately
700 hours due to the cuno screen being full of
magnesium particles. The new engine was fitted with new overhauled carburetor,
magnetos, starter and pre-oiler motor. The oil tank
was thoroughly flushed, propeller and governor overhauled and all oil lines
removed and flushed. The exhaust system was coated with a flexible ceramic
inside and out. It has had a very successful break-in with approximately 75
hours on it this date. Phillips XC 25W60 is used and replaced every 30 hours.
An aftermarket 10-micron filter with by-pass is in line with the return line to
tank.
